Commission quickly cleans Canada Memorial vandalism

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has quickly completed work to restore the Canada Memorial in Green Park, London, after it was vandalised on Monday.

CWGC was deeply saddened to learn it was among a number of memorials and statues in the area to be covered in white paint. On behalf of the Canadian Government the Commission looks after the upkeep of the Canada Memorial in honour of the more than one million Canadians who served alongside British forces during the World Wars.

Memorials such as this should give visitors a peaceful place to reflect on the sacrifices given by others. To deface it shows a total disrespect for the lives of those who fought and died alongside comrades from across the Commonwealth.

The site has now been completely cleaned courtesy of CWGC contractor ServiceMaster London and our thoughts are with those affected by this senseless attack on a number of important London memorials.
