CWGC joins the Western Front Way

CWGC’s Vice-Chairman and Director General have joined Sir Anthony Seldon on the closing stages of the Western Front Way.

Sir Bill Rollo and Claire Horton CBE accompanied Sir Anthony as he nears the end of his traverse of the new route.

The 1,000 km trail runs across the former First World War battlefields of France and Belgium – from Nieuwpoort in Belgium to the French-Swiss border.

It promotes understanding of the war’s impact and encourages future generations to pay tribute to those who fell, while exploring the landscape where they served.

On Saturday 16 October the group began their walk from CWGC’s Neuve Chappelle Memorial with a wreath-laying ceremony. Dedicated to the Indian Army forces who served in France, it commemorates over 4,700 soldiers and labourers who have no known grave.

From there, they passed a further eight CWGC cemeteries and memorials along their 22km journey. The stretch was chosen as it is an area often overlooked by visitors, yet it contains sites that tell the story of the true Commonwealth commitment on the Western Front.
