Martin Arthur Heathcote was born in 1892, the son of Arthur Malcolm and Mary Heathcote (née Forbes). He was the younger brother of James Shirley Heathcote and also educated at St Paul’s before becoming a stockbroker.
Martin joined B Company, 10th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers and was awarded the Military Cross. 2nd Lieutenant Martin Heathcote was wounded and died in July 1916. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission this was on the 18th, but the Alton Gazette of 29th July stated that ‘On 17th July after being wounded on the 15th, Sec.Lieut. Martin A Heathcote, Royal Fusiliers. Younger son of Arthur M Heathcote of Lower Farringdon, 24.’
He was awarded the 1914-15 Star and the British War and Victory Medals. 2nd Lieutenant Martin Arthur Heathcote was buried in the Heilly Station Cemetery, Méricourt-L’Abbé in France - Grave I. E. 15.
