Captain John Wilfred Hugh Trenchard of the Royal Garrison Artillery, was born at Edmonton Middlesex in April 1897, the son of Hugh Trenchard and Katherine Hawley.

The 1901 census records that the family lived at The Firs, Clayhill, Enfield. Hugh, aged 47, was born at Chard, Somerset and was a proprietor and employer of a steam laundry, Katherine Agnes, aged 33, born at Greenwich was a company director with the laundry. Children recorded were Constance, aged 12, and Evelyn, aged 10, both born Allerton Road, Stoke Newington, Alice Mary, aged 8, George John, Wilfred Hugh, aged 4 and Enid Katherine, aged 2, all born Enfield. There was also sister in law Ada Hawley, aged 30 and born at Barnes, Surrey and servants Helen Ritchie, aged 30, born Perth, Scotland, Mary Anne martin, aged 29, born Ireland, Kate Eynon, aged 27, born Salisbury, Wiltshire and Mabel Clare Swan, aged 18, born Saffron Walden, Essex.

In 1911, the family was living at Wolverton, Hadley Road, Enfield. There is one new child recorded, Elizabeth Ada, aged 7. Little else had changed although there were now six new servants.

John Trenchard joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and went to France in April 1916. He died of wounds on the 3rd of October 1917 at the age of 20, and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.

He is remembered on the grave of Hugh Trenchard, who died on the 22nd of March 1928, aged 74, and Katherine, who died on the 3rd of July 1953. His probate records his home address as Trefriw, The Ridgeway, Enfield and he left his estate of £184-11-7d to his father.

He was a keen sportsman and is recorded in "Wisden on the Great War: The Lives of Cricket's Fallen 1914-1918", as playing for the Mill Hill XI in the years 1914 and 1915.
