"He gave up his life for his King and country, and that he would do so over again if that were possible."

On Saturday the 16th of October 1915, the Peoples Journal (Perthshire) reported:

“Captain Cesari Falls - A Brave and Courageous Officer and an Old Perth Academy Boy"

“Keen regret will be felt in Perth City and County at the intimation that Captain Sydney M Cesari, RAMC, second son of the late Mr. Edward Cesari, of Inverness and Birnam, and Mrs. Cesari, Woodburn, Birnam, is officially reported killed in action in France on 3rd October."

“Captain Cesari was born on 3rd October 1890, being thus only 25 years of age. He went to France with the Expeditionary Force in August 1914, and was promoted to the rank of Captain in July last.

“His commanding officer, in communicating the details of his death, says:-

"‘It is a painful task for me to report to you the death of Captain Sydney Cesari, RAMC, who was killed on the evening of the 3rd inst.

"'He was a personal friend of mine, so I am deprived at once of a friend and a brave and courageous officer, and the only consolation I can offer to all his friends is that he gave up his life for his King and country, and that he would do so over again if that were possible. – Yours sincerely, P Sampson, OC, No 6 Field Ambulance, Second Division. ’"

"A wire has also been sent by Lord Kitchener expressing deep regret to Mrs Cesari.

“Captain Cesari was educated at Perth Academy, and at Edinburgh University, where he occupied honourable places in his classes during his course, gaining medals for surgery and anatomy.

"After graduating MB, ChB, in July 1913, he was appointed house surgeon in Greenock Infirmary, and in the early part of the following year he was appointed medical assistant in one of the wards in Edinburgh Infirmary. While there he passed his clinical examination for MD.

"The deceased was exceedingly well known in Perth and district, and when attending Perth Academy proved himself the outstanding athlete of his time. As a Rugby enthusiast he played for Edinburgh University, and for Greenock Wanderers while residing in the West.

"Quiet and unassuming, he gained for himself a wide circle of friends, wherever he was situated, and he was held in high respect by all who knew him, but by none more than his intimate friends.

Mrs Cesari’s only other son, Mr Oscar Cesari was formerly in New Zealand. He is a member of the New Zealand Contingent.”

Sydney Cesari is also commemorated on the Dunkeld and Little Dunkeld Parish War Memorial; the Royal School of Dunkeld War Memorial; and the Edinburgh University War Memorial.
