School Magazine “THE YOUNG BARBARIAN” - Christmas 1918

“THE OLD LUMBER ROOM"

“The great forts, which the world thought to be impregnable, have collapsed before the new big guns, which shatter everything to pieces. They have gone the way of the moated castles, the gallantry and patriotism."

"No one who had a casual acquaintance with the Rev. Charles Robertson of St. Andrew’s Parish Church could have suspected the fire that was slumbering beneath such a mild and gentle exterior. The War showed the greatness of his spirit. Volunteering as a Private, he was transferred, after service in the R.A.M.C., to a Chaplaincy."

"He was mortally wounded in what was practically the last rush of our troops in the near East, following up the infantry into danger, which, had he been so minded, he could doubtless have avoided."

"Numerous tributes bear witness to the love and esteem which he had earned amongst officers and men alike.”

Strathearn Herald, 19th October 1918

“PERTH CHAPLAIN DIES OF WOUNDS"

”Rev. Charles Robertson, St Andrew’s Parish Church, Perth, who has been acting as a chaplain with the Forces at Salonika, has died of wounds. He enlisted in the R.A.M.C. about two years ago, and went to Salonika, where, after a year’s service, he became a chaplain."

"He was a son of Mr Hope Robertson, Innernytie, Stanley, and went to St. Andrew’s, Perth about ten years ago.”

At the time of his death Charles Robertson was 39 years of age. Charles Robertson is also commemorated on the Lodge Royal Arch No.122 War Memorial; the Kinclaven Parish War Memorial; and the Edinburgh University War Memorial.

EARLY LIFE, EDUCATION AND MINISTRY

People’s Journal, March 15th 1919

“M.C. FOR LATE PERTH CHAPLAIN"

“The posthumous award of the Military Cross has been made to the Rev. Charles Robertson, St Andrew’s Church, Perth, who died at Salonika of wounds received in action on 19th September last, while serving as a chaplain."

"Writing from Bulgaria, the Rev. Kenneth Grant, St Andrew, Fife, who followed Mr Robertson as the Chaplain of the 12th A. and S. Highlanders, states that it is the desire of the men to perpetuate in some way the memory of their late friend, and that, if agreeable to the congregation, they would like to place in the church some small token of their affection for him, and their deep gratitude for the ideal he set before them in his life and in his death.”
