John Robert Thomas Medhurst was born on the 25th of February 1909 in Medway, Kent, to Thomas Medhurst (1884-1937) and Eleanor Frances Gambrill (1884-1966) and was christened in Luton, Kent on the 18th of April 1909.

The 1911 census lists Thomas and Eleanor residing in Luton with Thomas’ parents. Thomas’ occupation being given as a wood seller. Their son, John, (then aged 2), was listed as staying with his maternal grandparents in Rainham, Kent.

John would marry Lucy M. King (1914-1996) in West Ashford, Kent in 1936. The 1939 register lists the couple as residing in Chatham, with John working as a general labourer.

John Robert Thomas Medhurst was wounded in a bombing raid on the Chatham Dockyard on the 4th of December 1940. He died shortly after at the Royal Naval Hospital in Chatham the same day. He was 31 years old.

During the same bombing raid on the dockyard, 7 others were killed and 63 were wounded.

John was buried at the Chatham Palmerston Road Cemetery. Today, his grave remains unmarked - there are no markings visible on his grave. Lucy would remarry in 1946, and pass away in 1996 in Maidstone, Kent, aged 82 years old.
