Son of the late Henry Reid (barber) & his wife Mary who chose the simple headstone inscription "A LOVED ONE"

In 1901, the Reid family were living at Strathview, New Scone Road, Kinnoull, Perth: Father, Henry (Barber) (45); Mother, Mary A. (46); Son, John (Barber) (22); Son, James (Barber) (21); Daughter, Adelaide (19); Daughter, Henrietta (Typist) (16); Son, David (Apprentice Barber) (14); Son, Andrew (12); and Son, Alfred (6).

Alfred Reid originally served with the Highland Fusiliers 119th Regiment, Royal Engineers, before transferring to the 11th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters.

"September - October 1918."

"Summary of the time in Italy and transfer to France - At the beginning of September the Battalion was in action on the Asiago Plateau in Italy. The Battalion was then relieved by the 11th West Yorkshire Regiment and moved to Serona Camp becoming a Battalion of the Brigade in Divisional Reserve. They then spent a period of time training before moving to Centale Camp in preparation for embarkation at Morano station to travel by train to France. They passed through Italy and the South of France, along the Rhone Valley circumvented Paris and arrived at St Riguier at 6 a.m. on 18th September, where they detrained and marched to billets at Coulonvillers."

"After a period of time cleaning up etc. in the billets the Battalion carried out company training and attack practice. The Battalion was involved in: the Battle of Beaurevoir, Cambrai, the pursuit and Battle of Selle and the Battle of Sambre. The Battalion saw the end of the war near Lansrescies, France."

"3rd October, 1 p.m."

“The Battalion was standing by during the morning and at 1 p.m. moved out of camp...170 rounds of small arms ammunition and two bombs per man were issued and the men got into full battle order...The strength of the fighting portion of the Battalion was 14 officers and 501 O.Rs. During the night the area occupied by ’A’ Echelon was heavily shelled…"

”2 officers were wounded together with 2 O.Rs. Killed, 5 wounded and 7 missing."

"4th October, 8 p.m."

“Orders were received stating that the Brigade would attack on a 3 Battalion frontage on the morning of Oct. 5th. The Battalion moved into assembly positions at 3 a.m. During the assembly 1 officer and 3 O.Rs. Were wounded by machine gun fire.”

Lance-Corporal Alfred Reid would have been one of the casualties during the action which took place between the 3rd and 4th October 1918. He was 23 years of age.

Alfred Reid is also commemorated on the Jeanfield District War Memorial, Perth; and the Perth North Church War Memorial.
