"SNAKESHEAD RIDGE: 11 Indian Bde, inc. 2 Camerons, were given the horrible task of portering everything forward that was needed... L/Cpl Gaul was killed on the 8th round trip"

L/Cpl DB Gaul was killed in action on 22nd February 1944, whilst acting as a porter to resupply the troops of 4 Indian Division on Snakeshead Ridge at Cassino.

The division had taken over responsibility for Snakeshead Ridge from the Americans on 14 February 1944, but, being so high up and away from good roads, had to rely heavily on their own troops for supply. As a result, 11 Indian Brigade, of which 2 Camerons were part, were given the horrible task of portering everything forward that the troops needed. L Cpl Gaul would have been killed by an artillery shell at some point on the eighth round trip from Caira at the bottom to the supply dump at the top on Snakeshead Ridge.
