David Pryde was serving with the 7th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, at the time of his death and was killed during the attack on the enemy positions near Poelcappelle. He was 26 years old. The Battalion history states: “At 5.40 a.m. an intense barrage opened and the attack commenced. The Battalion followed the 9th Royal Scots which was held up in front of its objective and leapfrogged through them and followed up close to the barrage all the way until its own objective was reached in front of Poelcappelle. "About two hours after the objective was taken the enemy made a violent counter attack and drove back some troops on the left upon which the Battalions left company formed a defensive flank and repelled the attack. Over the two days fighting 22 were killed, 163 wounded and 16 noted as missing.” David Pryde is also commemorated on the York Place United Free Church War Memorial, Perth.
