Henry John Ellis was born in 1888 in London, his father, Richard, was 47 and his mother, Jane was 42. He had one brother and three sisters.

In 1901 Henry at the age of 13, was employed as an office boy, the family were living at 62 Bandon Rd, Bethnal Green, London, by 1911 he was serving with the 21st Lancers in Egypt.

He was mobilised from the reserve and attached to the 9th Lancers disembarking in France on 15th August 1914, he would be then attached to the 2nd Life Guards and died of wounds 16th May 1915. Henry was buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, I. A. 79.
