In 1901, the Scrimgeour family were living at 2, Rose Crescent. Perth: Father, David (Grocer, Storekeeper) b. 1854, Auchterarder; Mother, Helen, b. 1858, Scone; Daughter, Ella, b. 1890, Perth; Daughter, Mary b. 1892, Perth; and Son John, b. 1897, Perth. In 1891 there was also a reference to a daughter ,Helen S., b. 1890, Tibbermore.

On 6th December 1915, John A. Scrimgeour, a Bank Clerk, enlisted with the 4th Battalion, the Royal Scots (Regimental No. 4384). He embarked at Folkestone on 8th December 1916 and disembarked at Boulogne on the same date. He joined his unit at Etaples, on 9th December 1916, and was posted to the 5th/6th Battalion Royal Scots in the field, on 12th December 1916.

John Scrimgeour was admitted to Hursley Camp Hospital, on 6th February 1917 and from there embarked on 3 Ambulance Train, on 17th March 1917, to Hospital Ship H.M.H.S. St Andrew, for return to the U.K.

He then embarked from the UK, on 8th June 1917, and disembarked in France on the same date. He arrived at Etaples, on 9th June 1917, and was posted to the 11th Battalion Royal Scots.

John Scrimgeour was appointed unpaid Lance-Corporal, on 11th August 1917.

He was admitted to hospital with Trench Fever on 24th August 1917 and re-joined his battalion on 2nd September 1917. He was promoted to Corporal, on 25th September 1917, wounded in action on 13th October 1917, and reported wounded and missing at Ypres on 13th October 1917.

“Lance-Corporal John Alexander Scrimgeour , Royal Scots, only son of Mr David Scrimgeour, 7 Rose Crescent, Perth, has been killed in action. He was 21 years of age, and prior to joining the colours was employed in the west end branch of the Bank of Scotland, South Methven Street, Perth.”

John Scrimgeour is also commemorated on the Jeanfield District War Memorial, Perth and the Bank of Scotland War Memorial at it's headquarters on the Mound, Edinburgh.
