Perth-born Architect and Surveyor who emigrated to Canada

In 1901, the Campbell family were living at 48 Scott Street in Perth. The head of the household was Alexander, a sailor who'd been born around 1857 in Aberfeldy, Perthshire. His wife was Isabella who was born in 1853, also in Perth.

Alexander and Isabella had four daughters (Isabella jnr., Elizabeth, Mary and Annie) they also had one son - Thomas who was born on the 23rd of February, 1891.

Thomas was educated at Perth Academy and emigrated to Canada in 1911 aged 20, stating his destination as Montreal - where he subsequently worked as an architect and surveyor.

Keen to do his bit, Thomas enlisted with the Eastern Ontario Regiment on the 8th of December 1915 at Montreal, Quebec. Thomas's enlistment papers state that he had previously served for three years with the Scottish Horse Territorial Force.

Thomas Campbell died at Vimy Ridge and was originally buried in Bumble Trench Cemetery but he was one of five British-born soldiers whose remains were transferred to Bois-Carré Cemetery.

At the time of his death he was 26 years old.

On announcing his death, on the 23rd of May 1917, the Perthshire Advertiser reported:

“OUR OWN MEN - LATEST LOCAL CASUALTIES - KILLED, WOUNDED, MISSING. Private Tom Campbell Killed. Private Tom Campbell, of the Canadians, was killed in action on 17th inst.
