In 1901, the Robertson family were living in Dull, Aberfeldy, Perthshire: Father, James (Ploughman) b.1862, Logierait; Mother, Christina, b. 1859; Son, James, b.1889, Aberfeldy; Son, Peter Norman, b.1891, Aberfeldy; Son, Fergus, b.1893, Aberfeldy; and, Daughter, Christina Annie, b.1899, Aberfeldy. Also living at this address was James Mowat (Weaver, Tweed Cloth) b.1844, Alva, Clackmannanshire.
Fergus Robertson was educated at Breadalbane Academy, Perth Academy and Glasgow University, where he was an Arts Graduate.
He enlisted with the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots and attained the rank of Lance Corporal. On the 5th May 1917, he transferred to No. 5 Officer Cadet Battalion at Cambridge, and was appointed to a temporary commission as a Second Lieutenant with the 1/5th Battalion the Border Regiment (London Gazette dated 18th September 1917).
Fergus Robertson was reported missing on the 21st March 1918 and reported as being a prisoner of war on the 31st March 1918. He died at No. 16 Hospital at Mainz from pneumonia on the 3rd December 1918, aged 26.
Letter dated 20th December 1918, to Miss C. A. Robertson “The Military Secretary presents his compliments to Miss Robertson and deeply regrets to inform her that in a telegram sent to the Central Prisoners of War Committee, London, by the British Red Cross Society, Copenhagen, submitted to the War Office for consideration, it is stated that Second Lieutenant F. Robertson, Border Regiment (previously reported to be a Prisoner of War in hospital at Mainz, Germany) died at No. 16 Hospital, Mainz, from pneumonia on the 3rd December 1918. “The acceptance of this report for official purposes, however, will form the subject of a further communication from another Department. The Military Secretary is desired by the Secretary of State for War to express his sincere sympathy with Miss Robertson in her great distress”.
