John Walter Newlands Fitch was son of Walter and Emily Fitch, born in 1898. The family lived in the High Street, Hartley Wintney where his father ran a Draper and Grocer.

He was serving on HMS Hampshire when it struck a mine off Orkney on 5th June 1916. He was only 17 and is buried in Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery. Also on HMS Hampshire was William Henry Bennett from Hartley Wintney.

Both are remembered on the War Memorial in Hartley Wintney.
