Amery was educated at Wrekin College, Shropshire between 1924-1927 becoming a House Prefect in his final year. After leaving school he worked for Dunlops and also learned to fly in his spare time.

He was working in West Africa on the outbreak of war and although he applied for release it was not until March 1940 that he was allowed to return to England and join the RAF as a Sergeant. He soon gained his “wings” and was commissioned as Pilot Officer in 1941 with 115 Squadron.

After several operational missions over Germany he was accidentally killed during a test flight of Wellington Bomber IC R1517 [KO-Z], whereby the aircraft climbed slowly to 500ft, turned through 180 degrees before diving into the ground at Sporle, near Swaffham. Amery was aged 31 when he died on Tuesday 17th June 1941. Only one member of the crew survived.

He is buried at Marham Cemetery in Norfolk. Son of William Lavington Evans & Constance Ella Northup Evans.
