“There passed away at Gellyburn, Murthly, on Sunday, Private Drummond K. Rogers, 1st Black Watch, aged 18 years. Private Rogers was the third son of Mr David Rogers, Gellyburn.”

“DEATH OF ACADEMY ATHLETE"

“Deep regret will be felt over a wide area at the death of Private D. K. Rogers, Black Watch, which occurred at his home at Gellyburn, Murthly."

"Private Rogers was a well known student at Perth Academy, where in 1914 he was champion athlete. Leaving school, he proceeded to Nigg [Aberdeenshire] for training, and after a short time was drafted to France."

"He took part with his regiment in the battle of Loos, 15th September last , where he was wounded and gassed. The gas effects were terrible in their consequences, and from the base hospitals he was successively removed to Newcastle and Blairgowrie."

"A brother of Private Rogers is at present an invalid in Poona Military Hospital, having been severely wounded while acting with the Tigris force at Mesopotamia."

"Private Rogers is the second on the Murthly and Airntully School roll of honour who has fallen in the war. Much sympathy is felt for his father, brothers and sister.”

Drummond Rogers is also commemorated on the Caputh Parish War Memorial; the Murthly Parish War Memorial; the Dunkeld and Little Dunkeld Parish War Memorial; and the Murthly and Airntully Public School War Memorial.

"The Young Barbarian" the school magazine of Perth Academy

The Young Barbarian was published twice a year, at Midsummer and Christmas. From Christmas 1914 onwards each edition contained a series of lists which included the following information: The names of all those who had enlisted (under the heading Roll of Honour); The names of all those who had been promoted; The names of all those who had been mentioned in dispatches; The names of all those who had been awarded decorations for gallantry.

The magazine also included articles, poetry, photographs and contributions from those on war service. In the Christmas 1916 edition a poem dedicated to the memory of Drummond Rogers was included attributed to "W.G.". It is included below, along with photos of Drummond in his uniform and standing proudly on the North Inch, beside the school, having been named school senior athletics champion.
