Edward Copley was born on 20 May 1921 in Inverness, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son and one of ten children of Issic and Catherene Copley.

Originally working as a labourer, he enlisted into the Algonquin Regiment, R.C.I.C. in June 1941 aged 19.

On completing his training in Canada, he arrived in England on 22 May 1943, later disembarking in Normandy on 26 July 1944. Less than a month later on the 15 August he was killed in action during the liberation of the village of Potigny where he was initially buried. He was 21.

Edward was reburied in Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in 1946.
