Garnet Clayton Porter was born 12 August 1923 in Brooklyn, Hants Co., Nova Scotia to Laurine Victor and Harriet Maude Porter and was brother to Victor, Merle, Audrey and Carmen.

Garnet had been working as a farmer when he enlisted with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, R.C.I.C. on 16 December 1943. His basic training took place at No.60 CABTC Yarmouth and after completing it on 27 February 1944, he moved to Aldershot, Nova Scotia for his advanced training.

He married Emma Christina Benedict on 10 June 1944 at Newport, but soon left Canada on 26 June bound for England, the finally arriving in France on 23 July. He was killed in action on 9 August 1944 and was buried in a temporary cemetery at Gouvix, southeast of Caen on 10 August. He was 20 years old.

Garnet was reburied at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in 1945.
