Leonard was my father's brother...

He was the youngest in the family of four sisters and two other brothers. Leonard was enlisted into the British army. His home town was in Kirkby in Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, England.

Leonard was killed in action in France defending his country, the United Kingdom. Leonard was serving with the South Staffordshire Regiment as a Private and died on the 8th July 1944, aged 24 years old. He was the son of Jack and Lilly Footitt and all their family lived in the area in Kirkby in Ashfield.

Leonard was buried in the Cambes en Plaine war cemetery near Caen in Normandy.

I am writing this memorial in 2024...

It is 80 years ago now and I myself will be 80 years old this year. I never knew my Uncle as I was born two months after he had died. Leonard's young life had been taken away from him and I look back thanking him for giving me a wonderful life in a lovely happy country. Our family named two of his nephews after him and Leonard's photo was always on display. His grave has been visited by the younger members of our family and his name is registered so he will never be forgotten.

Never To Be Forgotten. I have tears in my eyes...

Mary Rowe. Née Footitt.
