Summary of the War Diaries of the 17th HLI

“In November the British Army launched the final large scale attack of 1916 in the Battle of the Somme...it was a 5 day engagement known as the Battle of Ancre between 13th and 18th November"

“The 17th H.L.I. came to know it as the Battle of Beaumont Hamel based on the specific location they fought at. Their main task was to storm the New Munich Trench system."

“The 17th Battalion were billeted at nearby Emelberger on the 17th November and were ordered to prepare to attack on the morning of the 18th, commencing at 6.10 am. Officers report it being a bitterly cold night with snow falling across the front lines through the night, turning to rain as dawn broke."

“The artillery barrage that commenced at 6.10 am was commented on as being utterly ineffective by officers of the H.L.I. Indeed some went as far as to say that the barrage was so mis-directed that it was responsible for a great many friendly casualties."

“At the end of the day, the 17th H.L.I. had suffered significant casualties, with in excess of 310 men of all ranks noted as missing, wounded or killed.”

It is assumed that Roderick Stenning was one of these casualties, either killed by his own artillery, or killed in the process of storming the enemy trench system.

At the time of his death Roderick Stenning was 19 years old.

Roderick Stenning is also commemorated on the Tibbermore Parish War Memorial and the Tulloch Institute War Memorial, Perth.
