William was born in 1876 to Alfred and Emily Hoare in Hartley Wintney.

In the 1891 census the family were living in Chapel Row but by the 1901 census they had moved to Minley Road, Hawley where William was working as a carter.

William married Alice in 1911 and they lived at 1 Hope Cottages, Cove. Alice had a son Arthur and they had a son, William, in 1911. 

William enlisted with The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) in December 1914. He died of his wounds on 27th July 1915 and is buried at the Woburn Abbey Cemetery in France next to the Dressing Station where he was taken.

Alice remarried and became Alice Chittenden and lived at 15 Mildmay Terrace in Hartley Wintney.
