Alfred Jesse Gale was born in Hartley Wintney in 1875 to Jesse and Mary Anne Gale. On the 1881 census they were living at Hartford Bridge and his father was a cowman. By the 1891 census they had moved to Grange Farm in Hartley Wintney where his father was a farm labourer. Alfred was an errand boy. In 1901 Alfred’s parents are living on the Cricket Green in Hartley Wintney but we are unable to trace Alfred.

We do know that in March 1914, Alfred emigrated to India with his wife and three children. He enlisted in Madras in India.

Alfred died in Mesopotamia on the 2nd November 1915 and is buried in the Basra Military cemetery in Iraq. He is remembered on the War Memorial in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire.
