George (Anthony) Greig was born in Perth and educated at Perth Academy, Denstone College, Uttoxeter and, in 1917, Edinburgh Theological College. He studied at the University of Durham obtaining a Licentiate of Theology in 1910 and a BA in 1911. Anthony was made a Deacon in 1911 by the Bishop of St Andrews for Glasgow and ordained Priest by the Bishop of Glasgow in 1912.
He was the Curate of Christ Church, Glasgow from 1911-15 when he became a Temporary Chaplain to the Royal Navy serving on HMS Russell. Anthony suffered gas poisoning in an explosion on the ship and died in hospital on the following day, aged 28. His families address at that time was: Hunter H and Phoebe J Greig, 30 Luttrell Avenue, Putney, London.
HMS Russell was a battleship built by Palmers at Jarrow and began service in 1903. At the time of his death, the ship was part of the 2nd detached Squadron based at Taranto to re-enforce the Italian Fleet in the Adriatic. She had been at Mudros and covered the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula and was mined off Malta on 27 April 1916.
George Anthony Greig is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour in the Denstone College Chapel.
