Visiting information

ARRIVAL

The route to the cemetery from the parking area in the village is signposted.

There is a cut grass track from the road (rue de Lealvillers) to the main entrance.

The cemetery is located behind residential properties off the road.

PARKING

There is a large grocery store adjacent to the pathway with a large, paved car park.

Along the side of the main road in front of the grocery store there is a layby with space for 2 or 3 vehicles. There is a paved footpath adjacent to the road. A grass pathway leads to the cemetery between the car park and a residential property. A CWGC Cemetery Direction sign on the side of the road indicates the direction to the cemetery.

All the parking areas are flat and firm with tarmac surfaces.

ACCESS LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

The grass pathway is approximately 100 metres long leading from the road. The car park for the grocery store is adjacent to the path, and parking is possible 25 metres from the cemetery entrance.

The cemetery is surrounded by a low stone wall with a hedge running along the length of the cemetery behind the Cross of Sacrifice.

There is a stone semi-circular paved area at the main entrance. The paving continues into the cemetery to the Cross of Sacrifice, and then on to a stone seating area at the far end of the cemetery. The paving is level with the grass pathway at the entrance.

A black metal gate, one metre wide, is located at the entrance between two stone pillars. There is an up-down latch on the top left corner of the gate and opens inwards into the cemetery.

The Cross of Sacrifice is approximately 15 metres from the main entrance. The Cross is on a raised platform, level with the pathways on either side, and two deep steps lead down to the burial area. There is a dirt strip between the step and the grass. The ground slopes down from the pathway to the burial area.

The Register Box is inside the main entrance of the cemetery mounted onto the right-side pillar.

The internal cemetery paths are grass, and the ground is firm.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

There are no alternative entrances into the cemetery.

History information

The VIII Corps Collection Station was placed at Acheux in readiness for the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the graves of July, August and September 1916, in Row A and part of Row B, are the earliest in the cemetery. A few graves in Row B mark the period of eighteen months during which the field ambulances had moved eastwards and the cemetery was little used. The remaining graves cover the period April to August 1918, when the German offensives brought the Allied front line within 8 kilometres of Acheux.

There are now 180 First World War burials in the cemetery.

The cemetery was designed by N A Rew.
