Location information

Leghorn (properly LIVORNO) British Cemetery is located to the north of the town about 1 kilometre before reaching Venezia Nuova (New Venice). The cemetery is in Via Pera No.2, and the entrance is clearly visible as it has large neoclassical columns at the top of the stone steps. Cemetery Address: Via Don Aldo Mei, 19 - 57121 Livorno (LI). GPS Co-ordinates: 43°33'40" N - 10°19'00" E.

For security reasons, the cemetery is kept locked. Visitors should contact the Arciconfraternita della Misericordia (Tel: +39 0586 883333) to make arrangements to visit the cemetery.

History information

The Italians entered the war on the Allied side, declaring war on Austria, in May 1915. Commonwealth forces were at the Italian front between November 1917 and November 1918. The Royal and Merchant Navies were active in the Mediterranean and Adriatic throughout the war and many of their dead are buried along the Italian coast. Leghorn British Cemetery contains two Commonwealth burials of the First World War.
