The following details are given in the London Gazette of June 12th, 1942: "The King has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the George Cross for great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty to Lieutenant (Acting Lieutenant-Commander) William Ewart Hiscock, D.S.C., R.N."
Lt. Cdr. Hiscock was given the task of disarming an Italian torpedo mine which had fallen in 12 feet of water in St. Georges Bay, Malta during September 1941. At that time no information was available of this type of mine, therefore it was of considerable danger. Together with his assistant Petty Officer C. Le Bargy, D.S.M., Hiscock managed to defuse the bomb even though it had started ticking and could have exploded at any second.
