The London Gazette for 15th March, 1946, states that Naik Kirpa Ram was awarded the George Cross "for most conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner". His battalion, having returned to India from Burma, was in a rest camp at Bangalore. During a field firing exercise, a rifle grenade fell short and landed only eight yards in front of Naik Kirpa Ram's section. Without hesitation he picked it up, shouting to his men to take cover. Before he could throw it away, it exploded, wounding him fatally.
