History information

During the Second World War, a military hospital was established in the Tempe Military camp, which also housed the headquarters of the Orange Free State Command. Numbers 27 and 62 Air Schools were operated from the Bloemspruit Aerodrome very close to the city, where training was carried out under the Empire Air Training Scheme. Bloemfontein (In Memoriam) Cemetery contains 17 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 45 from the Second World War.
