Location information
Gallipoli is a town and seaport in the Gulf of Taranto, 76 kilometres from Brindisi (where there is an airport), and 37 kilometres from Lecce. From Lecce, take the S101 to Gallipoli and from this road follow the signs to "Porto" as one approaches the town. Proceed to the town centre for approximately 3 kilometres, then follow the signs in the direction of Maglie. The cemetery can be seen from this road on the outskirts of the town. The Commonwealth war graves are situated on the left after passing through the main cemetery entrance. Cemetery Address: Via Cimitero - 73014 Gallipoli (LE). History information
The Italians entered the war on the Allied side, declaring war on Austria, in May 1915. Commonwealth forces were at the Italian front between November 1917 and November 1918.
The Royal and Merchant Navies were active in the Mediterranean and Adriatic throughout the war and many of their dead are buried along the Italian coast. In 1917, Gallipoli was made the base of the motor launches sent to the Adriatic Drifter Fleet.
Gallipoli Communal Cemetery contains seven Commonwealth burials of the First World War.
