History information

Sheffield Crematorium, which belongs to the City Corporation, is situated in the City Road Cemetery to the right of the main entrance in City Road. It was constructed in 1904 and was attached to the chapel which already existed in the cemetery. During the 1939-1945 War 30 servicemen were cremated in this cemetery. Their names are recorded on a memorial in the War Graves Plot in Section H on the south-west corner of the cemetery. The memorial, situated in the centre of the western boundary of the plot, is a screen wall made of Portland stone and set on a paved path. The names are engraved on four panels, two on each side of a central panel which bears the dates 1939-1945. At the top of the memorial, carved round a large incised Cross, are the words: THESE MEMBERS OF HIS MAJESTY'S FORCES DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND WERE CREMATED
