Location information

Kampala, the capital of Uganda, lies close to the northern shore of Lake Victoria. The war graves plot is all that is now left of what was once a large African burial ground, now given over to growing bananas and cassava. The cemetery will be found on the Old Port Bell Road, which runs west from the city centre, about 8 kilomentres out of town close to the large Uganda Coffee Board building. The war graves plot is set about 300 metres back from the road up a rough track that was once the main drive of the civil cemetery. The track is opposite the Shell petrol station and a direction sign has been provided to indicate the turning.

Visiting information

ARRIVAL

The route to the cemetery is not signposted. There is CWGC sign on the main entrance gate.

PARKING

It is possible to park in the lay-by at the front of the cemetery, close to main gate. The area is flat with a concrete surface, within 1 metre of the main gate.

ACCESS, LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

The cemetery is small and rectangular, surrounded by a metal fence.

The main double gate is in the middle of a mid-height, metal security fence. The opening section is 3 metres wide. Both sections, 1.5 metres wide open into the cemetery. The ground between the concrete lay-by and grass of the cemetery has broken stone and uneven gravel, which can make the gate difficult to open.

The headstones are positioned around the perimeter of the cemetery, along the boundary fence line.

There is a large flat grass space in the centre of the cemetery.

The ground is flat, internal surface is grass.
