Location information

The cemetery is approximately 6 kilometres north of the city centre in a district called Bornova. The Cemetery is in a built up area with apartment blocks overlooking. The Cemetery is not Commission constructed but the red painted front wall and white cross should easily be viewed from the main road. Visitors would best reach the cemetery by private car or taxi. The main road along the bay (known as Altin Yol) is the D550. Approximately 5 kilometres north from Izmir is a junction named "Zafer Payzin Kavsagi", here the road is signposted Bornova. Heading east on this road (known as Izmir - Ankara Asfalti) in the direction of Ankara, the cemetery is 3.5 kilometres from the junction, approximately 50 metres off the north side of the road.

Visiting information

The Cemetery is kept locked at all times and access is given by guardian who lives in the cottage to the right of the entrance.

The two Commission headstones and one private memorial can be found on the far right of this side entrance.

History information

During the Second World War, Turkey retained her neutrality and those Commonwealth servicemen buried there were mainly men taken prisoner during operations in the Aegean, who died while attempting to escape from camps where they awaited transport to Germany and Italy, and whose bodies were washed up on the Turkish coast. This civil cemetery contains three Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
