Location information

Thika is a large town 40 kilometres north-east of Nairobi. The cemetery is located on the western outskirts of the town, on the old Garissa road, 1 kilometre past the Police Station on the right of the road to the railway station, and is next to Thika Civil Cemetery. The route from the main Nairobi road is signposted.

ARRIVAL

The route to the cemetery is signposted.

PARKING

It is possible to park on the exterior of the cemetery boundary along a single lane track.

The ground is firm and flat. The surface of the track is compacted gravel.

ACCESS, LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

A compacted gravel track with slightly raised kerbs on either side leads to the main entrance gate. A mid-height, black metal gate 1.8 metre wide, with two sections opens inwards, each with a circular ring style handle.

Inside the main entrance gate there is a semi-circular paved area. In front of the gate is a concrete strip with a level change of 5 cm downwards between the gravel area and the paving.

There is a dirt strip between the paved area and the grass, with a level change of 5 cm down to the dirt and grass.

The Cross of Sacrifice is close to the main entrance in a central position.

There is a seating area with a stone bench at the furthest point of the cemetery from the main entrance.

The ground is flat and firm, the internal paths are grass.

There is an information sign on the entrance pillar (on the inside of the cemetery).

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

There are no alternative entrances to the cemetery.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Thika War Cemetery is open Monday to Friday between 0800 hrs to 1800 hrs.

Outside of these hours the cemetery is closed and padlocked.

• The code for the padlock can be obtained by calling the CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) Kenya Office on 00254 202604301.

The opening hours for the Kenya CWGC office are Monday to Friday 0830 hrs to 1230 hrs and 1330 hrs to 1630 hrs. The office is closed at weekends.
