Visiting information

PARKING

There is a carpark at the cemetery, with spaces for two cars to park. The surface of the car park is firm and level and approximately five metres from the main entrance to the cemetery.

ACCESS, LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

Access into the cemetery is by climbing four steps from the car park that lead up to metal gates, with each approximately 600mm wide. Once inside, the cemetery slopes away from the gate on a steep upwards incline. All the access paths inside the cemetery are grass. The internal cemetery paths are mostly clear and flat, but in parts of the cemetery roots from trees have created lumps in the ground surface.

The cemetery is on the side of a hill, there is a steep slope with a stepped terrace at the furthest point from the main entrance. In the middle of the stepped terrace area sits the Stone of Remembrance: directly behind is the Cross of Sacrifice. On each side of the Cross of Sacrifice is a small stone chapel. Inside each are stone benches, with a Register Box is in the wall of the chapel on the left side of the cemetery.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

The cemetery is steeply sloped, with a stepped terrace at the furthest point from the main entrance. The internal paths are turf or grass. There is no alternative access point other than the main entrance.

History information

The Italians entered the war on the Allied side, declaring war on Austria, in May 1915. Commonwealth forces were at the Italian front between November 1917 and November 1918, and rest camps and medical units were established at various locations in northern Italy behind the front, some of them remaining until 1919.

Between April 1918 and February 1919 those who died from wounds or disease in the 9th, 24th and 39th Casualty Clearing Stations were buried either here or at Dueville. Certain graves were brought in after the Armistice from other burial grounds in the area.

Montecchio Precalcino Communal Cemetery Extension contains 439 Commonwealth burials of the First World War.
