Location information

St. Nazaire is a coastal town in the Department of the Loire-Atlantique, 65 kilometres west of Nantes and 124 kilometres south-west of Rennes. The Commonwealth War Graves Plot lies within the grounds of the Communal Cemetery, which is not far from the railway and bus station. Head west on Bd Willy Brandt toward Bd in the direction of 'Toute-Aide', turn left on boulevard Paul Perrin. Keep right at the fork and continue onto Boulevard Victor Hugo.

ARRIVAL

The route to the civil cemetery is signposted and there are additional signs on the main gate and inside the civil cemetery indicating that Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) graves are in a plot within the cemetery.

The CWGC plot is to the top left-hand side of the cemetery when entering through the main gate.

PARKING

It is possible to park vehicles along the side of the main road (Boul. Victor Hugo) close to the main entrance of the cemetery, within 20 metres. There is a dedicated accessible parking space on the north side of the entrance. Parking south of the entrance is metered.

The ground is flat and firm, surface is tarmac.

ACCESS LAYOUT AND MAIN ENTRANCE

The main entrance to the civil cemetery is wide (over 4 metres) with two tall white stone pillars. The gate is tall and metal. Access into the cemetery is step-free. The gate is left open during working hours.

To the left and right of the main gate are two smaller entrances, 1 metre wide, with twist and push opening handles, both small gates are locked outside working hours.

From the main entrance a wide tarmac path follows a route to a central circular space with an obelisk memorial in the centre, approximately 90 metres from the entrance. There are grilled drainage covers located along the centre of the path. To reach the CWGC plot turn left and follow the paved pathway another 40 metres to the southwest corner of the civil cemetery.

All internal paths are flat and firm, topped with tarmac.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

There are no other entrances into the cemetery.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The cemetery is open from 0700 hrs to 1900 hrs each day (Monday to Sunday). The main gate is closed and locked outside of these hours.

History information

There are now over 80, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Four of the British graves, now among the French, came from ST. NAZAIRE AMERICAN CEMETERY.
